Andrew Gross started roasting coffee with his brother-in-law 40 years ago. He has influenced many household names like Campos, Toby’s Estate, Sacred Grounds and Aroma. After all these years Andrew noted that with age he does not have the physical ability to lift the heavy bags like he used to. Then, like many, an idea came to him. What if he could automate the process?
How do you automate a full coffee roaster without disrupting production? Could it be possible to create custom components to suit the client's working process and where possible include old, legacy machinery? Together we created an automated method by which he could load his roasting bags.
We consulted and understood his existing process then designed and tested automated solution and prevented disruption of production by managing the assessing risk before and during the project and inserting the contingencies where needed.
The process involved:
Designing the layout of the facility;
Refurbishing a 1960s 20 kg Probat;
Designing and building a new destoner;
Automation of loading and packaging of beans;
He greatly reduced the manufacturing process times won, drastically improved quality control and eliminated miscellaneous errors due to fatigue.
Overnight, principles of OH&S were now able to be applied to his work and after many years of experience, he now has the ability to improve his production process. This scalable solution lends itself to being rolled out to other industrial coffee roasters.
